A high-risk pregnancy means the mother, baby or both have a higher-than-usual chance of developing complications. The term does not mean that a poor outcome is inevitable. Many high-risk pregnancies progress well when risks are identified early and monitoring is tailored to the individual.
Why can a pregnancy be high risk?
Risk may be related to maternal age, pre-existing diabetes or hypertension, heart or kidney disease, certain autoimmune disorders, previous pregnancy complications, multiple pregnancy, placental problems, fetal growth concerns or other conditions. Sometimes a pregnancy becomes high risk because a new complication develops during pregnancy.
Monitoring matters
The care plan may involve more frequent antenatal visits, blood pressure and urine checks, blood tests, ultrasound examinations, fetal growth assessment or other monitoring. The exact schedule depends on the risk. Keeping appointments is particularly important because some serious complications can begin with few symptoms.
Hospital preparedness
Families should know where to seek care, how to reach the maternity unit at any hour and what to do if urgent symptoms occur. Ask about emergency services, blood-bank arrangements when relevant, neonatal support and whether additional specialists may be involved.
What you can do
Take medicines and supplements exactly as prescribed, monitor conditions such as diabetes or blood pressure when advised, maintain appropriate activity and nutrition, and report changes rather than waiting for the next appointment. Avoid self-medication and unverified pregnancy remedies.
When to seek medical help?
Heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, severe breathlessness, seizures, severe headache with visual disturbance, fainting, sudden swelling with concerning symptoms, or reduced fetal movement require urgent maternity evaluation.
